Summer is the most popular wedding season in Bavaria: ceremonies by the lake, receptions in a beer garden or on a terrace, dancing until the sun comes up again. It is beautiful, but heat, sun and humidity are a real test for makeup and hair. Here is how I prepare a bridal look that stays fresh on a hot day.
Skin Prep: Light Layers Only
In summer, less is more under the makeup. Rich creams that are perfect in winter make the base slide in the heat.
- Use a light, gel-based moisturiser
- Apply sunscreen early, at least 15 minutes before makeup, so it can settle
- Choose a mattifying primer on the T-zone and a hydrating one only where the skin is dry
If you are getting married outdoors, protect your neck, chest and shoulders with sunscreen too. Sunburn on the shoulders shows in every photo with a strapless dress.
A Base That Breathes
Heavy, full-coverage foundation is the first thing to break down in the heat. For summer brides I work with thin layers of a long-wear foundation, concealer only where needed, and powder pressed in only on the areas that shine first. The skin should still look like skin.
Waterproof Where It Counts
- Waterproof mascara and a tubing mascara are reliable in humidity and for happy tears
- Cream-to-powder blush and bronzer last longer than pure powders on warm skin
- Long-wear brow gel keeps the shape all day
- A setting spray made for heat finishes the look
Hair in Heat and Humidity
Humidity makes hair frizz, and heat makes curls drop. For summer I often recommend:
- Soft updos or half-up styles, which keep the neck cool and hold their shape
- A well-prepared base with texture spray, so curls are set before the day starts
- Fresh flowers only if they can handle a few hours without water
Plan Around the Sun
Talk to your photographer about the light. The midday sun is harsh on the face, while the hour before sunset gives warm, soft light that flatters everyone. Plan couple portraits for the evening and keep the ceremony in the shade where you can.
Your Summer Touch-Up Kit
- Blotting papers (they remove shine without adding powder)
- Your lipstick or lip colour
- A small fan and a bottle of water
- A few bobby pins and a mini hairspray

A summer bride should look fresh, not "made up". Light skin prep, long-wear products, a hairstyle that suits the weather and a plan for the light are what make the look last from the ceremony to the last dance.
